Style Guide: Best hats for Ascot

May 04 2013

Royal Ascot used to be an event where racegoers wore the best of the best when it came to fashion- shoulders were covered, hems were slightly lower, gentlemen always remembered their top hats and ties, and hats were remarkable.

In recent years, things have changed quite a bit... there have been strapless dresses, bared midriffs, daring cleavage, drunken brawls, men forgot their ties, and hats were less of a statement and looked more like an embellished hair pin.

Last year, the organisers decided to issue a Style Guide, which was met with some disapproval. It was a gentle reminder of how to dress, and although racegoers weren't exactly thrilled with having to follow a fashion dress code, the organisers have commented that the overall look and behaviour at the event was "markedly improved". So, this year it'll be the same strict code (with an addition that fascinators will no longer be allowed in the Royal Enclosure), with the Royal Ascot having their very own "fashion police" at the entrance to make sure racegoers heed the rules.

Now, here at Shappos HQ, we're serious about our hats. And what better event than Royal Ascot to place bets on which hats will be the best ones to wear for any kind of look? Here's what we think (and we promise it'll be well in line with any fashion book anyone tries to throw at you!):

If you want to go for a simple, ladylike look that can be worn with a pretty spring dress or a simple A-line shift, a pair of great gloves and a clutch... then go no further than the Retro Daisy, Liberty Spike or Tweedy Bird. All of these are very understated hats that are extremely wearable:

However, if you'd like something a little less traditional but still ladylike, with a does of attitude? Try the Luxe Leopard. It has a fantastic shape, very wearable, but a bit of a masculine twist, so it would be great paired with a fitted black dress, leopard heels, and even a red clutch. Make sure to wear your hair up in a low bun in the back to complete the look:

If you're looking for a more relaxed, summery and retro look, then our new little gem is the Gatsby cloche, which would be perfect for retro accessories and a feminine dress:

And finally, for the really grand entrance, why not go for a show-stopper, the one that looks fit for royalty? Yep, that's the Great Kate. It's stunning, and a great pic for a fabulous dress and extravagant heels:

And remember, if you're not sure which hat is best for your face shape, you can always check our site to see which is the best hat for you. But what's great about these specific pillboxes and cloches, is that they suit pretty much any face shape. Even more reason to shop for that one great hat and get those heels on, ready for the races!
