Mums and mums-to-be: what hats to wear for the summer

May 08 2013

There are a lot of conversations between women about what hats to wear for the summer. Especially with the past week's weather being so warm and sunny, it's a perfect time to think about how best to shield your face from the sun and keep cool.

It's always a tough choice, really, because you don't necessarily want to wear a hat that covers your face with a giant brim, but you also don't want something so fashionable that it offers no sun protection and isn't really travel-friendly. Also, for pregnant ladies, the idea is to update your maternity wardrobe and feel really ladylike whilst you're trying to stay nice and cool (a challenge when you're heavily pregnant!).

What's great about summer hats is that you can wear your hair up in a loose chignon, down with beachy waves, in a braid, a low bun... and it will always look great with what your wearing because summer fashion is always really relaxed and forgiving.. and will make choosing a hat that much easier. And if you're pregnant and just looking for something easy to wear and not something that will give you a fashion crisis, our picks below will be no-brainers!

Straw caps and wide brim sun hats are the best ones for a casual look, versatility (they're size-adjustable and crushable!), and a good brim for sun protection:

If it's more of a "look" you're after, especially if you're wearing a sundress or are off to a casual summer party, then a straw floppy hat or a straw cloche hat are good choices:

Or, for something completely different, why not try a silk head scarf? It's a very 70s look and would be great with a maxi dress:

Easy breezy choices, that aren't boring, great quality and definitely not things that everyone can find on the high street, which is nice. Now all you need is the suncream!
